Self-care as a single mother: How to find time for yourself despite a stressful everyday life

Life as a single mom is a full-time job with barely any breaks. Appointments, household chores, work, and childcare—everything demands your attention. I know this all too well.

There are days when it feels like I'm just functioning, without a moment for myself. And yes, I too keep falling into the hamster wheel and have to remind myself that I'm important – and that my needs shouldn't take a back seat.

Self-care

Why self-care is so important

It's simple: If you constantly overextend yourself, you won't be able to be there for yourself or your children in the long run. Self-care isn't selfish, but rather the foundation for managing your everyday life. A balanced, content mother is also a great role model for her children.

Small steps that make a big difference

Self-care doesn't always have to mean spending half a day at the spa. It's often the little things that can reconnect you with yourself:

Schedule time for yourself: Yes, you deserve it! Set aside specific times, whether it's 10 minutes in the morning for a quiet cup of coffee or a short break with a book in the evening. Block these times in your calendar like an important appointment.

Seize small moments: Even if your day is hectic, you can still take a moment of mindfulness. Close your eyes for two minutes, breathe deeply, and exhale. It sounds simple, but it can work wonders.

Accept help: We all feel like we have to do everything on our own. But the truth is, it's okay to need help. Whether it's from friends, family, or a babysitter, use the support to create a little space for yourself.

Say no sometimes: You can't please everyone. Set priorities and learn to say no when something is beyond your capabilities.

Get moving: Exercise or getting some fresh air can work wonders. A short walk, yoga, or dancing in the kitchen—all of these things help clear your head.

And when the hamster wheel calls?

I want to be honest: self-care is an ongoing process. There are always days when I fall back into old patterns, when I completely lose myself in the demands of everyday life.

But the most important thing is: I keep reminding myself that I can get out – and that I'm worth taking care of myself.

Sometimes it helps me to simply ask myself: “What do I need right now?” And sometimes even a small thing is enough – a warm shower, a phone call with a friend, or just a few minutes alone.

You are important!

Never forget: You are the most important person in your life. Only when you are well can you be there for your children. Give yourself the same love and care that you give to others.

And if, like me, you keep getting caught in the hamster wheel, let's remember: It's never too late to take a moment for ourselves. You are not alone—we all struggle with the same challenges. But we can do this—one small step at a time.

What are your little self-care rituals? I'd love to hear from you!
